Arabinogalactan (AG) is a phytochemical extracted from the timber of the larch tree. AG has a beneficial effect upon the immune system as it increases the activity of natural killer cells (a type of white blood cell that destroys tumor cells and cells infected with certain organisms), and other immune system components, thus helping the body to fight infection. AG also acts as a food supply for “friendly” bacteria, in that it helps to increase levels of “good” bacteria such as bifidobacteria and lactobacillus, while eliminating “bad” bacteria. The immune-enhancing herb echinacea also contains AG, as do leeks, carrots, radishes, pears, wheat, red wine, and tomatoes.*
Side Effects: Arabinogalactan may cause bloating. Doses of up to 10 grams per day are seemingly well tolerated. However, very high doses (30 grams or more per day) may cause gastrointestinal side effects. Larch arabinogalactan contains galactose, therefore people with who require a low galactose diet and those with lactose intolerance should avoid taking this supplement. Pregnant women and nursing mothers should avoid larch arabinogalactan supplements.
Recommended Dosage: Adults should take two teaspoons (5 grams) of Larch AG one to three times per day. The pediatric dose is two-thirds teaspoon one to three times per day. Because of its mild taste, Larch AG can be added to water or juice.
