Methylselenocysteine |
| Selenium is an essential trace element, necessary for growth and protein synthesis. It helps to increase the effectiveness of vitamin E, and acts as an antioxidant to protect cells from the free radical damage that causes aging and is linked to many age-related diseases. Research suggests that selenium is vital for the proper functioning of the immune system, and that it can increase levels of white blood cells, therefore enhancing the body's ability to fight illness and infection. Selenium may also inhibit viral replication. A number of studies have found that selenium deficiency is linked to increased occurrence or progression of viral infections, thus supporting the theory that the mineral inhibits viral replication. Broome et al found that selenium supplementation improved immune function and increased the rate of clearance of poliovirus vaccine in humans. A study of elderly men and women by Girodon revealed that those who received zinc and selenium supplements demonstrated a better immune response to the influenza vaccine than those who received placebo. Thus suggesting that supplementary selenium and zinc may help to boost immunity in older people and improve their resistance to infections, such as influenza. Good dietary sources of selenium include: Brewer's yeast and wheat germ, liver, butter, fish (mackeral, tuna, halibut, flounder, herring, smelts) and shellfish (oysters, scallops and lobster), garlic, whole grains, sunflower seeds, and Brazil nuts.*

Side Effects: Side effects are rare, but can include dizziness, nausea, brittle fingernails, and hair loss. People taking cholesterol-lowering medications, such as statins, should consult their physician before taking supplementary selenium as it may reduce their effectiveness.*
| Recommended Dosage: Take one to two capsules per day, or as directed by your healthcare professional.
| Scientific Opinion:
"Selenium is one of the most under-recognized and under-appreciated minerals. It is a potent antioxidant, protecting cells from the free radical damage that is implicated to aging and age-related diseases." -- Ronald Klatz, M.D., D.O. (President - American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine)
