Lactoferrin is a protein found in breast milk, which helps the infant to combat infection whilst the immune system is not yet fully functional. Lactoferrin is most abundant in colostrum. Lactoferrin regulates iron in the digestive tract, thus helping to maintain the balance of helpful bacteria and harmful bacteria that need iron to grow. Lactoferrin is thought to boost the immune system. Research has shown that lactoferrin modulates the migration, maturation, and function of immune cells. Artym et al found that lactoferrin helped to accelerate the restoration of immune responsiveness in bone marrow transplant recipients whose immune systems’ had been impaired by chemotherapy. Lactoferrin has both antibacterial and antiviral properties. Research has shown that it may be useful for the treatment of HIV when taken in combination with standard antiretrovital therapy.
